Guest Speaker:
Greg Orner, J. Seidel, and E. Peterson of
Dearborn Recreation Department gave a presentation on
the status of Dearborn pools. Greg
Orner stated that the department has a five year
master plan that lays out the changes and maintenance
for Dearborn’s recreation department for the next
five years of projects, this plan currently addressing
2010.
With
eight community pools, Dearborn can boast that it has
the most operating community pools in the state. The
city with the nearest number is Grand Rapids with six.
Our neighbors in Wayne and Macomb counties are far
behind in this recreational offering.
The
recreation department is weighing the options of
replacing some of the neighborhood pools with “Spray
Parks” a type of fixed sprinkler that sprays water,
hosing people off rather than immersing in a pool.
Spray parks appeal to primarily younger
children where pools offer recreation for a wider age
group.
Cause
for this exploration is the need of maintenance to
bring our pools to State compliance on filtration
rates and building infrastructure repairs. Dunworth
pool is the only compliant outdoor facility to date.
There is funding currently available to
retrofit existing pools filtration systems, the
department is exploring options.
Pools
account for the third highest recreation division
subsidy behind Seniors, then Camp Dearborn. The idea
of a spray park is attractive to the recreation
department as a way to reduce attendants/ lifeguards
(it was proposed that one single attendant could
handle a spray park) reduced usage of chemicals and
less assistance by department of Public Works Building
Services Staff.
Questions
from the DFNA-
Myron Lemecha asked if upgrades to existing pools would also benefit
energy and chemical savings, and can spray parks be
added as a feature of existing facilities.
Dave Tillman asked if there is increased liability as spray parks
appear to lend themselves to running and other
horseplay, and whether the parks would be a recycling
or total water loss system.
The
Department of Recreation is looking for citizen input
prior to the April 8th council meeting.
Also, the city is holding an information meeting: The
Dearborn Recreation Commission will conduct a public
hearing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at the Ford
Community & Performing Arts Center (Studio A)
concerning the city’s outdoor pools and swimming
programs.
The
hearing is intended to provide a forum for Dearborn
residents to express their opinions regarding the
city’s outdoor aquatic facilities and programs.
Dana Holben from the Dearborn Area Board of Realtors reminded the
DFNA of the Big Open House slated for April 27th.
Area realtors will be marketing our city and Dana asked for neighborhood participation in the form of events or
promotion of our neighborhoods, she also offered
assistance to groups in planning events contact her
at: www.dana@dabor.com.

Sylvia Tillman spoke to the DFNA on the topic of Michigan Historic
Preservation Network’s (MHPN) 28th Annual Preservation Conference.
This conference will expose hundreds of
preservation minded people to Dearborn. The annual
conference is the MHPN’s largest event and showcases
cities and regions for their unique place in Michigan
history. From the press release for
the conference:
The Michigan Historic Preservation Network (MHPN)
presents its 28th Annual Preservation
Conference May 8-10, 2008, at the Dearborn Inn,
Dearborn, Michigan.
The conference "Preserving History,
Conserving Energy," celebrates preservation's
important role in sustainable design and the
permanent, skilled jobs it brings to your community.
The conference includes a theme track featuring
sessions on "green" restoration and its
application in neighborhoods, commercial districts,
rural settings, and metro areas. Supporting the theme,
three additional tracks cover policy and incentive
basics, hands-on techniques, and tours.
For more information on the conference
contact Nancy Finegood, Executive Director, 517-371-8080 or the website

Old Business:
Terry Pulido Updated
the group on progress with Heavens Helpers, They are
based at Dearborn Christian Fellowship Church and are
still looking for families and individuals in need and
volunteers to assist.
Dave Tillman Is
asking DFNA members for “success stories” how your
involvement in the DFNA has helped your neighborhood
and our town. Dave wants to compile a brief to be used as a tool to help spur
involvement of dormant neighborhoods.
Ann Basse
Reminded us that Meals on Wheels are in
need of volunteers.
Myron Lemecha

Helpers initiative, as well as the Springtime smoke
detector battery replacement campaigns.
